This photograph was not taken on Mars, nor was it manipulated in any way in Photoshop.
It is essentially a straight record of one of the most remarkable photographic locations on the planet –
Deadvlei, Namibia.

The red sand of the Namib desert , as seen in the dune rising in the background, has a very high iron content,
and this was accentuated by the warm light of the rising sun.
