First Impressions is a new portfolio by Michael Reichmann. It is an edition limited to just 25 copies. The portfolio contains images taken in early 2005 in Bangladesh. Presented in a magnificent hand-made presentation case, it consists of twenty 11X17" prints, along with an artist statement and a page of thumbnail, which consists of location information as well as situational and technical data on each image. Each print is separated by interleaving paper, and a pair of cotton gloves is provided.
From the Artists Statement
In early 2005 I lead a small photographic expedition to Bangladesh, a country which is almost completely unknown to foreign travellers. Our guide was Pierre Claquin, a French-born medical doctor and epidemiologist who has spent much of the past 13 years living and working in Bangladesh. He is, as well, a highly talented photographer.
Following this trip, in March, 2005, an exhibition of work by both Pierre and me was held at the Pikto Gallery in Toronto, Canada, where I live. The photographs in this portfolio are taken from those exhibited at that show.
My primary motivation for wanting to photograph in Bangladesh had been images which I’d seen by both Sebastiao Salgado and Edward Burtynsky taken at the ship-breaking yards in Chittagong. I was driven to visit this almost mythical place, and memories of these images catalyzed my plans during the more than a year of preparation.
During our two weeks in Bangladesh we spent time not only in the crowded cities of Dhaka and Chittagong, but also in the lush Mangrove forests along the Bay of Bengal. To get there and back we spent four days aboard a small cruise boat discovering the unique life of villagers and fisherman which has been largely unchanged for hundreds of years.
