- The Magic Element - Emotion by William Neill
What incredient distinguishes good photographs from great ones? One important characteristic of an artist is the ability and willingness to express and share emotions in his or her work. For example, paintings can show anger, or a sculpture can convey joy. Of course, the viewer can only imagine the state of the artist’s mind but if the work is successful, one can often gain an insight into the artist’s experience or mood. A strong work of art can illicit emotions in the viewer both obvious and unexpected whether they are the same emotions the artist felt or not.

If you ask me what my favorite light for photography is, I will say soft light like on a rainy day. I will say that the reason for this preference is the subtlety of light where harsh shadows are not present and for the richness of colors that can be recorded in such conditions. Sometimes though, nature's lighting is anything but subtle. When the sun is shining, I look for the edges of light.

- Yosemite Sanctuary by William Neill
William Neill has been photographing the landscapes of Yosemite National Park since 1977. His essay discusses how Yosemite has inspired him over those many years, and what he has learned from the experience. The article features seven of his signature Yosemite photographs. In his new ebook William Neill's Yosemite: Volume One, he has compiled 52 of his favorite images created using film cameras. The majority of the photographs were made with a 4x5 view camera, and the exposure dates range from 1977 to 2005.
