There is a herd of several dozen mountain goats that hangs out in summer just beyond the highest spot on the Beartooth Highway. The altitude here is almost 11,000 feet. Mountain goat hunting is allowed in the fall, so the goats here tend to be a little spooky.
These goats will still have a goat looking winter coat if you photograph them in June. Late in the summer they will appear somewhat ragged as they shed.
TIMES
Early morning or late afternoon is the best time for this shot. Unless you have overcast weather, the mid day lighting at this altitude is quite harsh. The above shot was taken with an 800mm lens.
