Q for 2400 Users Fmrly Using 2200 & ImagePrint 6

Are you a current Epson R2400 printer owner who formerly owned an Epson 2200 and also used the ImagePrint 6.x RIP? If so, did you upgrade/convert your ImagePrint license for use with your new 2400? If so, what was your motivation?

I used ImagePrint exclusively with my 2200. It produced, by any measures, the finest fidelity of prints I could achieve with that printer.

But having recently switched to the 2400 with the new K3 inks and new Epson driver I'm finding that the quality of prints produced natively easily meets or exceeds the results with the 2200/ImagePrint combination. Admittedly I print almost exclusively on Epson papers, although I also do some Legion papers. Yes, I know ImagePrint offers an extensive range of paper profiles. But I'm having a hard time justifying upgrading to ImagePrint 6.1 for the 2400. The printer seems to be doing just wonderfully all by itself (and more conveniently than with an external application, particularly one as awkward as ImagePrint). ImagePrint's version for the 2000 series printers always seemed a bit user-hateful and sneering to me. If you happened to try to use one out-of-bounds feature it would silently punish you by ruining your print with "DEMO" watermarks. I always thought that this was really malicious.

I asked this same question at FM but received no response whatsoever.  I'd welcome others' experiences and thoughts on this subject.

I'm still using my 2200, with IP 5.6. I share your frustrations with it, but I haven't been able to get prints as good without it, except B&W, for which I use the QuadTone RIP (reasonably priced and does a good job, but monochrome only). So I have no experience with the K3 inks, but I am encouraged by your comments to try to get away without ImagePrint when I finally do upgrade.

I hope you do get some responses from K3+IP users here.

Ken,
Does this include B & W images?  I am thinking of making the same switch, but I am reluctant to give up IP's superior monochrome abilities.

Yes, to my eye, the new Epson driver easily rivals IP's b&w results.  I recently printed a series of TX400 images taken with my Leica M7 and was really stunned by how good they looked (on glossy paper).  Certainly the K3 inks play a part in the improvement.  But the driver is also due credit.

Is ImagePrint available for the Epson 2400?  I check their web site periodically and when last I looked (yesterday) they do not show the R2400 as a supported printer.  It is a little curious because in their price list they do show it.

Yes, I'm pretty sure that it is.  Although I've not heard anything from any current IP / 2400 users here or at FM.

The Image Print driver for the 2400 has not been released yet. According to IP it will be coming soon, nothing firm as far as what "soon" means.
