  interested in hearing what type of paper/brand you guys prefer for matte prints, and what you prefer for glossy (anything at all glossy)

Current favorite matte paper: Epson Velvet Fine Art

Current favorite glossy paper: Pictorico Hi-Gloss White Film

Matte v. Glossy: my current work involves very high-contrast B&W images. I need high d-max to make them work so I'm mostly printing on glossy.

I view papers and inks as tools, and I'm using the ones that I feel are best for the job at hand. Ask me next month (when I'm working on something else), and you'll probably get different answers .

it may seem like a pointless thread at first but since there are so many types of papers out there, i'm trying to get an idea of which ones i should move to the top of my list of papers to look into.

Ilford Gallerie makes an excellent glossy paper and an excellent pearl (or luster) paper.

Matte:
1. Moab Kayenta Photo Matte for proofing/everyday;
2. Moab Entrada Fine Art White, Fine Art Natural (avail 190gsm or 300gsm) for sale or portfolio;
3. Arches Infinity Smooth ($$$$$) for a recent exhibition--fabulous stuff

Smooth/Gloss:
1. Red River Ultra Pro Satin (I do so little gloss that it hardly matters) for "everyday";
2. Innova Fibaprint F Gloss;
3. eager to try Hahnemuhle Fine Art Pearl.

Most of my work has been fine-art B&W and I've stuck with matte, but lately I've been trying more smooth/glossy with the newer papers available. Bronzing has been a problem with Ultrachrome inks in my Epson 4000 on the gloss papers, partly mitigated by Premier Art Spray.

How are people finding the 'reflectiveness' of the new pearl/gloss papers?

One of the primary reasons I have used matte and fine art papers is that with anything bigger than a 10 x 8 on pearl/luster or gloss you get quite a lot of surface reflectiveness which IMHO can be a distraction.  

However I have often felt that Matte paper sometimes lacks the punch and dmax of the other papers.  Photo-rag is a favourite.

Its a tough one really!  

I have been trying out a sample pack of Da Vinci Fibre Gloss.  This is a stunning paper but does bronze with my 2200.  Printguard thankfully clears this up.  But alas it does have a refletive coating.

I am interested to here what this new Hahn' Pearl is like.

thanks for the replies.  i did some digging around and found an old but similar thread where moab entrada natural was mentioned quite a few times.  i'll be taking a closer look at entrada and ilford smooth pearl when i get the chance.  does anyone have any comments or comparisons to make regarding epson enhanced matte?

My experience is primarily with 2 matte papers. Epson Enhanced Matte and Moab Entrada Natural 300gsm. There is no comparison. The Moab has a richness which adds dimensionality to the print. I stopped looking when I found Moab. Plus it’s double coated so you can print both sides. I have yet to try the Hannemule paper.
