A plea for legibility on LL

It's really impossible to please everyone.  And although someone said "it should only take an hour or so..." I have never run into a web project that worked that way.  

Fortunately, most of the articles on this site are not as long/dense as Alain's.

But here's a low-tech solution:

1. Ctrl-A (select all) on the page. Copy.

2. Go to your email program (if fully featured, i.e. can handle html) or word processor.

3. Paste.

4. Ctrl-A again and format text if necessary. For example, a serif font (i.e. Times Roman)  is easier to read than a sans serif font (i.e. Arial/Verdana).

When I did the above, it took me about 20 seconds, and I had the text in a very readable format.  

I appreciate Michael providing us the content. If I have to do a little adaptation on my end in order to consume the content, I'm more than fine with that!

I do agree that the web is a challenging medium for long essays, no matter how well formatted and laid out the site is.  This is what motivated me to offer the PDF versions.  It has also made me think twice about publishing long essays, and in fact I tried at least 4 versions of Being an Artist in Business, but each time it got longer instead of shorter...

Like your previous ones, this essay is a very compelling read. I don't mind doing a little work to format it to my own taste, either.

Your hotel show experience is a little reminiscent of Ansel's, except that he married into Best's Studio in Yosemite and thus had pretty good control over the situation from the start. I bought my first signed, mounted prints there for (gasp) $6 each. He raised his prices eventually, too.  

Anyway, thanks for the great series. I look forward to the next installment, however long it may be.

Thank you.  The next installment will be published on Luminous-landscape soon.  This will be also the final essay in the Aesthetics & Photography series.  Afterwards I will focus on the new Reflections on Photography & Art series.

Ansel's story with Best's studio is no longer an option now.  The Ntl Parks are increasingly "pushing out" any sort of commercial venture, even when these provide an added benefit to the visitors.

We wouldn’t keep coming back for more if we didn’t like the way you write them!   As the image should choose the matting… the essay should choose the size.

Hi there,

I'm a great fan of luminous landscape but it is definately a very clunky old website. Here's my initial idea of what a redesign might be like:

Very plain design but i think that helps the readability. Obviously not all the content is there, could do with a thing advertising the video journal e.t.c

Anybody like this? anybody have any suggestions to make it better?

Hi Alex...

  I may be a "... very clunky old ... " reader , but the design as shown (yes, I know it's not a finished product) has basic positives and negatives.    I agree that the typefaces are easier to read, but what is lost to me is the unique and frankly “branding” of the website as it sits today.  I’m not saying there are not areas for improvement, but the site is unique in not only it’s content, but it’s delivery and “flavor” too.    Maybe it’s too much to ask for, but is there a way to keep the flavor of the site while addressing some of the smaller/consistency issues mentioned by others here?
