Jenoptik and Leaf

Hello everyone,

I was aware that Phase One and Mamiya decided to start to work together. Also that Leica bought Sinar from Jenoptik. I just learned that Jenoptik and Leaf decided to partner together.... I think this is good news for both companies.

Thank You!! This is the first I have heard of it LEAF/JENOPTIK! Has Leica bought out Jenoptik share of Sinar??? Where does that leave Sinar? Also Hermes has sold out of Leica according to DP review. Now Leica controls Sinar ( 51%). If this is true, bad news for Sinar as the latest backs were Jenoptik. Very good news for Leaf ( MY choice ). Phase/Mamiya I( think this is great for Mamiya as long as they keep an open platform with Leaf/Sinar. What about the MAC group in the US, they are the agents for Leaf & Mamiya. I have never seen so much movement in the MFD industry. Last but not least is the H3D39 closed loop system. Also the Hy6 camera from Rolie. Very interesting times.

Actually I think this is old news and stems from just before Jenoptik sold its Sinar shares to Leica.
If you read the report, which is from Sept. 25th, it states that both companies will work together in regards to the HY6 ("The new Medium Format camera to be introduced at Phokina").
We've since learned that Jenoptik has decided to refocus on its core business interests and is pulling out of the digital camera business. They were key players in the development of the HY6 and have now sold their shares of Sinar to Leica and I haven't heard or read anything about a cooperation, partnership or transfer of technology with Leaf, regarding digital backs.
But who knows, things seem to be happening very fast at the moment.

Hmm, a bit like in my art school years, everybody goes to bed with everbody,  

some years ago Hasselblad was flirting with Phaseone, Mamiya with Leaf, now all this change.
If i was looking for a back, i would wait a few month to see how things evolve...

the eMotion-75 is actually very useful and is a more compact unit as the Aptus-75.
The battery sits inside and there's also the 6GB built-in HD + the screen is the best of all backs!

The new camera has a particular camera-lens mount and a particular back-camera mount (Leaf is designing 3 new backs for the camera).
Jenoptik is working with Leaf.
Jenoptik and Phase One are the big "digital" players in this game (with Imacon, of course).
Phase One can participate in the project, and an announcement is expected.
This is an 'open platform' for lens and back manufacturers.
Leica has bought Sinar only because the owner of Leica collects photographic companies. Actually, there are no plans in Leica for future MF products... I hope Leica develops new MF lenses (Panasonic could help here bringing autofocus and image stabilization technologies).

I am waiting for Michael Reichmann's analysis. He knows Phase One's managers and his analysis will be very interesting.

The article in the BJP says it all.

There is a bit more than this going on behind the scenes, but as of last week the story as told is quite accurate. Be aware though that the MF industry continues in a constant sate of flux. At least one company is currently on the sales block looking for a new owner, and certain other partnerships are financial in nature, rather than driven by technology.

Making trade show alliances is one thing. Turning them into real-world products and then delivering is another.

I'm excitied about the Hy6 system. By this time next year we could have versions from Sinar, Leaf and Phase shipping, along with lenses from Zeiss and Schneider (previous Rollei 6000) series, as well as additional new models).

Buyers will be able to buy a Sinar, Leaf or Phase branded version of the Hy6, along with a back of their choice. Down the road if changing back brands is desired then only a new back adaptor plate will be needed.

Compare this with Hasselblad's new closed architecture approach.

Interesting times ahead for the MF industry.
