Rock and Canyon

At times I'm satisfied with this shot, and other times I feel like it is lacking...big time.

Seeking honest critique and suggestions.

This is one of the photos I put on my "to do later list". To me the objects and shapes are all in good places, but the light lacks interest. The sky is just plain blue and the shadow in the foreground is distracting. I would come back when the weather is interesting at a time of day that illuminates the boulder.

I have a large collection of "practice photos", especially local ones, that are just waiting for the weather to cooperate. When the weather does cooperate I'm ready to go out and maximize my time.

Thanks for the comments and critique guys. I was hoping the image was 'salvageable' overall, but I will take your advise and scout it out again. Fortunately this location is only about 15 minutes away, I just need to move my lazy butt out there again.

I think is not a lighting problem, the lines in the image, they are found just in the center, that impedes that the traveled through visual flow for the remainder of the image, and given that, in the center there is not any attractive figure, does that the image lose all the power.

Before you try again, look carefully at the image you have.  Decide what you like and what you would do differently.  Plan your next shot instead of just going there and doing the same things again.  Figure out what you want and how to get that, then move at the right time.

Good photos are plannedand are rarely accidents.  You may encounter unexpected conditions, so be prepared to rethink your plan when you get there.  But avoid just shooting and plan the shot's composition, effects of light, DoF, etc.  You might eben try to sketch out what you want to your photograph to look like.  A written plan.

With practice, planning becomes more second nature and photography more intuitive.  But even the masters plan.  Planning includes what lens to take, a tripod perhaps, color or b&w.  The list goes on.  

I am not a member of the school of photography that teaches you to shoot everything, bracket like crazy, then sort through 10,000 images a few weeks later searching for a couple of keepers.  An executed carefully planned photo is a real joy, even if not a keeper.  At least you got what you wanted and expected.  MAybe learned something to use next time.  You, like me, may find the machine gun approach hard to reconstruct what went wrong and right.

I concur with those who said the lighting is not the best, try again later. Even a few clouds in the sky would make the shot more interesting. If possible, try raising the camera higher, like by shooting from the roof of your vehicle, to capture more of what's between the foreground and distant background. That could add interest as well.

I like the reflections in the upper part of the rock though. I think that there is good potential for a graphic image focussing on the lower part by playing with blue tones.

Another thing that doesn't work for me besides what others have mentioned is the DoF. You have either too much or not enough for my taste.
