Sharpening...

Wouldn't it be nice if you could sharpen images for the resolution your outputting for? For example, if I create a slideshow, the files are going to be yxz size and should be sharpened then. Or, if I make a print, should I be able to sharpen the image for the print size? Seems like having a sharpening tool in each module would be a good thing.

Photokit Sharpener has that.

And both Qimage and Lightroom allow for sharpening at the print stage after final size has been set.

I use a very low setting in Qimage when I print up to 13x19, but if I go larger I uprez in PS to the final size, then use Photokit Sharpener for final output sharpening.

True about LR, but there is no preview to see what the settings are doing. Also, they are needed for slideshow, and web.

I strongly suspect that sharpening is one of the subsystems that the Adobe folks will be bolstering for the initial release.

I think they should employ something similar to Focus Magic, or DXO's Lens Softness sharpener... I could be mistaken, but the boys from Rawshooter had something akin to those called "detail extraction." Unsharp mask is useful, but I've found that tools such as Focus Magic are excellent for partially undoing the effects of the AA filter, as well as images that are slightly out of focus. Adding an alternative to ye olde Unsharp Mask would certainly keep Lightroom competitive with the latest DXO (and their newest UI is fairly similar to Lightroom's, suggesting they've already geared up to compete with Adobe's emerging program).

Another endorsement for Focus Magic, I use that as my capture sharpening.  It also provides a really quick assessment as to the quality of focus by the extent of the adjustment it recommends.
