NEC or EIZO

I need to order a new lcd early next week. My LaCie 19 blue died! I was looking at the 2190uxi, the CG19, and CE210W,maybe CE240W or 2490uxi. wich one would you pick! anybody saw those LCD side by side? From what i understand if i pic the NEC i would need to get the spectraview software for a better calibration? I Use a G5 Dual 2.3 and eye-one display 2. I need more opinion before i can make up my mind! Please help !!!

i have the CE240W...best monitor i have ever seen...was looking at the highest end eizo's, could not see the difference....there are some reports that the display is uneven from side to side....can't say mine is, the problem with the big monitors is the size! very hard to find the right distance to get an even view....the CE240W is much better then apple displays IMO...and no matter which display, i always see some shifts if i get up or look at it from an angle...the eizo hardware calibration does not work with intel macs!!

Do you mean won't work on the windows side or with the entire duo core machine?  and whichever you mean, do you get around that or just not calibrate?

If it's hard to find a good angle viewing, I don't see the reason to spend the extra $$$ for the extra space

It's nice to have big screen but if the clients and people I'm working with have to sit on my chair to look at the photos then it's not good.

Anybody else with a NEC or Eizo out there!!!

Still wondering wich one to get.  leaning a bit toward the 2190UXI

Well if it's just anecdotal reports you're looking for, I've had the NEC 2090uxi for about six months and couldn't be happier with it.  It calibrated well and easily with the Eye One Display 2 and Eye One Match 3.6 in DDI/CI mode, and it calibrates even better and more easily with the NEC Spectraview  II software, which addresses its internal 12-bit LUTs directly.  Highly recommended.

I recently purchased the Eizo S2410 (wide screen), which is the low cost version of the CE240, it lacks hardware calibration but it's considerably cheaper. I am very hapy with it.

If you buy a LCD, make sure it's brightnes can be reduced to about 80-120cd/m2 (normal values for a CRT) otherwise it will blind your eyes. My Eizo can be adjusted between about 80-350cd/m2. Currently I have adjusted it to about 120cd/m2 which is more then enough. In the first week I used much brighter levels (160-200 cd/m2) but my eyes got dry and tired after a weekend of Photoshopping.

My second choice is the NEC2690WUxi, but it's still not available yet and has a larger dot pitch.

If you search this forum on S2410 you will find more comments. I personaly have no regrets at all of buying a wide screen monitor, it's ideal for imaging.

I had a CE240W next to my CG19 for a week.  It was an early model with the un-even backlight.  The kind of backlight/panel used in the CE240W does cause the image to get lighter when viewing images from off axis even without the quality control issue.  This personal experience was confirmed by the Eizo Rep at the Epson Print Academy.  This makes it useless on a shoot with a Photographer, Art director, and Client who are looking at the image from three different angles.  The display is perfectly fine if it is being used by one person.  I bought the CE240W trying to avoid the Magenta problems I had seen on several 23" ACD's.  I have stuck with the Eizo CG19 instead.  The new NEC 2690wuxi is what I am looking into.  25" of almost Adobe 1998 at 2k looks good to me.  I will want to see the off-axis viewing quality though.  I bought the original CE240W at Samy's.  They took it back without any issues.  I would recommend buying from a store that will understand if you don't like the viewing angle or uniformity.

I have not had any problems with viewing angle on the CG19 or on any of the ACD's.  The 30" ACD's I have seen also do not have any magenta casts.  I think the magenta issue is specific to the 23" model.

Yep, this is true. The viewing angle is no problem if the monitor is used at a normal viewing distance and viewing angle. This is typical for S-PVA panels, if viewing angle is an issue you should look for a S-IPS, or True White  IPS panels. IPS panels are only available in the Eizo CG series and some individual Eizo monitors and in most of the NEC 90 series models. But for the average hobbiest like me, the Eizo S2410 is a dream for a reasonable price (€1149) and 5 year full waranty.
