I just received an email from my Phase dealer that Phase One will be raising their upgrade prices starting Feb 1st:

The cost of P-Series to P+ upgrades will increase from $5,990 to $7,990. This
limited time offer was intended for customers who had recently purchased a
P-Series digital back before the P+ digital backs were announced in September
2006.

I believe they also wrote that you can only upgrade to P+ backs from now on.

Does this mean the P+ backs are enaring shipment?

The P+ backs will start shipping in June.

Phase One just announced that after February 1, 2007 that they
will no longer offer an upgrade path from the LightPhase backs.

Well if P+ backs don't ship in February then there will effectively be no possibility of upgrading until they do ship

Well, you can purchase the upgrades now, if you are willing to wait until March for delivery.

just when i thought i was finally happy with my choice of MFDB choice...there comes a little grain of salt....or 25% price increase....i just bought a P30 and was hoping to upgrade to the P30+ within the next year...for 6000....one of the reasons was to actually wait and see the difference, how much of a performance jump this would be....i am not spending 6000 on a better screen....1600, better color, better screen, better speed,...would be worth considering....but now i am pretty much forced to make a decision RIGHT NOW and the product is coming out in 3-6 months which is when i will be able to see if the 6000 (sorry i am still stuck at that number...the 8000 just hurts too much) is actually worth the price?!

an example: i am quoting a job in november for x$ one part shot right away, the second part might happen in 6 months for x$...the customer agrees on the price, they choose me for a certain look and my general greatness, but they are pretty much locked in with my look for the second part (wave of ads, whatever)......we shoot the first part, everybody is happy...2 months later i tell them that if they still want to do the second wave, i will be more then happy to do it but it will be an extra 25%...just because i can....take it or leave it....great way of doing business....i am sure i will get that call again...

i am not blaming cliff or any dealers here (unless they knew, which i cannot imagine...) but nowhere was the 6000 upgrade price listed/mentioned as a "promo" or temporary....
the fact that the price gets jacked up like that (25%!!!!!!)and i don't even have a chance to see what i am buying??? are they crazy?? as much as i like the product...this is BS....

oh, i get it! the extra 2000 will pay to get the forum up and running again!

That was my issue with the bump.  I'm sure many, like you and I apparently, were sold with the "you can upgrade fo $xxxx" sales pitch.  I'm sure the sales people didn't expect the price increase.  There should have been some indication that the price was temporary.

Who knows, maybe in April they'll bump it up again.

Yes it was an incentive for me too, I'm not very happy with this increase in price, seems a little underhanded to me. It should have been made clear when we bought our backs that the upgrade price was only temporarly 6000.

I got my P 25 as a demo/used for $14k if you ad to that $8k =$22k not so bad considering that my P 25's value is depreciating as we speak.

If you get a Canon and want to upgrade you are on your own, you would have to sell the 1DsMk2 on eBay to get the 1DsMk3 that may cost more.

Probably the segment is as risky for the manufacturers as it is for us consumers, prices will continue to change in an unpredictable way, up or down, but probably down at the end.

After I got my PhaseOne and approached clients, just by explaining how much the back costs opened  the doors in a strange -- in a positive way -- resulting in new work.

What I want to say is that, of course, who doesn't want P 45's at $8k, but then again, the ball game would be more soft and less hard ball, I think.

what are you all grumbling about ? if you want to upgrade at the lower price you have till Feb 1st to do it ! seems fair notice to me.

I doubt your credit card is charged till they can deliver the + series, so end of story.

I'd have prefered more transparency when I bought the back, I was told the upgrade was 6000 not that the upgrade is 6000 until february. Why was I not told this?

What are we grumbling about...  How about being upfront?

And why would I want to commit to a product that doesn't exist in its final form and has an unknown level of quality?  Are they just going to happily let you out of the upgrade if you decide you don't like the + models?

i am not sure i can follow you....the upgrade price we are talking about is not for a P45 (from a P25) but from a P (30,...) to a P+ (30,....) of course i would upgrade to a P45 for 8000....no problem....

i don't understand how this increase is justified in any way...i bought a back 6 weeks ago and was told by the rep and the dealer that the price to upgrade would be 6000.....the +backs were announced months ago, i doubt that the there has been any added costs to the manufacturing/distribution/....of these backs, so why an increase of 25%? i understand that sometimes things get more expensive (parts, even currency fluctuations can play a part) but 25% in 6 weeks? and all of a sudden the 6000 price was supposed to be a special? come on....

maybe my card won't be charged for 3 months...that is not the point...i don't even know what i am paying for! if i had the option to put the order in now, get charged when the back ships, check it out and have the right to stick with my P (instead of the P+) and get my money back, i have no problem with this scenario, but i doubt i have that option....

i would really like to know how Phase can justify the increase....give me a good reason, explain and please don't insult me by calling the 6000 price a special....

I thought that buyers of the P30 in the last few months had a free upgrade to the P30+. Was there a special, lower price if you bought the P30 without an automatic upgrade?

Correct.  As I said in my review here, when I bought the P30 recently, I actually "bought" the P30+.  Since the P30+ doesn't exist yet, you get the regular P30 as a "loaner" in the meantime.  So, in other words, I have already bought and paid for a P30+ -- I'm just waiting for it to ship.  It would have been several thousand dollars cheaper (I don't remember the exact difference) to just have bought the P30, rather than buying the P30+ and getting a "loaner" P30 while waiting.

i had the option to buy the P30 or the P30+, i believe the difference in price was a little less then 6000...the P30+ wasn't coming out for at least 4-5 months and i am not sure why i should buy a product that nobody has even seen or tested and that i might not get for 8 months (we all know how flexible delivery dates are)...so i went with the P30, knowing (or thinking) that the worst case scenario would be 6000 whenever the P+ actually comes out and i can see if the extra money is worth the upgrade....also who knows maybe in 6-8 months i will trade up to the P45+?

i (unlike many here) have always defended the price structure of MFDB in this and other forums, but i simply don't see the reason for this increase and find the claim that the quoted upgrade price (by the phase rep!) was a special insulting, because it implies that i am either an idiot for not reading the fine print or i (and the rep and the dealer) was simply lied to....

either way i will take this up with my dealer and i am sure that we will work something out....but that does not solve the actual problem, which is that this is simply not a way to do business....i guess we have been giving a little too much praise to phase in these forums...

I too got the notice to the new upgrade price, for my type of work, I did not want to upgrade the first time at $6000 but now at $8000 what are they thinking? People that buy Phase One has a lot of money to give out? I do have a P45 and it has a very good imager. Most of the images, I don't even used the LLC correction. That is why I will not take another chance and get one that really need LLC corrections.
