RE: the recent discussions about the Z Series printers and head strikes, "Zebra Stripes" and ink smearing...

I couldn't figure out what you guys were talking about. I have NEVER had "Zebra stripes" going up to 355gsm on my Z3100. I know other Z users who also do not have this problem. However, I know at least one user who got Zebras because he did not understand the correct settings to use. The Z has a special paper-load setting for over 250gsm; raises the carriage height. Apparently, people are missing this point (maybe not the only one but a key one).

Well, guess what... HP has been listening to all this chatter and studying it themselves. There seem to be several factors that come into play, including humidity, and HP has created a Tech Note describing them.

Very interesting, thanks for posting.

I initially did what they mention in C with the HM FAP, ie made a profile using the default height, however when I was told that I could change it, and found out how to bump it to the high setting I still got stripes, although less of them.

Section D is a little confusing the way it's written (at leaqst to me), it looks like they are warning about humidity > 40%, when in fact it is low humidity that is the problem.  In my case it was ~20% or so, however they are right when they say follow the paper specs.  HM FAP is 35% for a low.

During the conference call I had with Barcelona they did discuss (amongst themselves) whether the ratio of GE to ink could be part of the problem.  Later on I was told that they will create a new custom profile for HM FAP and let me try it out.  Section E doesn't mention this paper specifically so there may be others FA papers with issues.  The tech support guys I spoke to did tell me that they have seen it on glossy media though.
