I will be shooting RAW in the CO. mtns. at an elevation of 10-12,000 ft. with a canon rebel xti  Do I need to use a polorizing filter?

will you "need" to? no.

would it be beneficial? if done right, yes.

its an enhancement, thus its not a requirement. a poleriser would help but also consider   an A1 filter which might help cut true the hase.

A polarizing filter will definitely help with any glare but at altitude on a clear day it can make the skies very dark. In those circumstances non-linear polarization looks more obvious when using wide angle lenses. I would take one but I would be tempted to take a photograph with the filter and one without. You could also reduce the amount of polarization by turning the filter's outer ring.

I agree with Daryl. Shoot with and without the polarizer and see what works best. Since you will be shooting with a digital camera, you have nothing to loose. You certainly won't be wasting any film and flash cards are getting cheaper and cheaper. Keep in mind, when you have a great subject in front of you, shoot it as many ways as possible. Especially when it is a location you may never return to.
