Looking for illustrated travelogues

I subscribed to National Geographic Traveler in the hopes it has changed from being a collection of disparate tidbits of travel info aimed at the lowest-common denominator. It hasn't. There are only one or two short travelogues with generally poor photography and mediocre-to-excellent writing. Rest is along the lines "ten hotels you can't afford in Phoenix, AZ," "walking tour in Beijing," or "how to hug trees and not leave a trace while traveling." While I'm sure the articles are of interest to many, I couldn't care less, as I can get that information elsewhere if I cared. And enough with the carbon credits, but that's another (long long) rant.

Are there any dead-tree publications which offer travel photography along with good writing? Not about places to visit, but about traveling, the experience, and the peripheral thoughts and ideas.

Or do I have to get the fix from separate sources, ie. photographic fix from Lenswork, and writing from Playboy (I heard it also has pictures)?

There are a couple of threads right here on the LL forum you might want to consider. They definitely speak to "traveling, the experience", and they relate to photography. Not many pictures, however. For those, you'll need Lenswork or Playboy.

Actually, that used to be a pretty good source for many things, way back. It´s been years since I ended my subscription but I still remember one article they did on the northern end of the Costa Brave in Spain.

I think that more or less all travel articles will end up being about, or at least paying a degree of homage to certain hotels - even some of my own foreign fashion stuff had to be financed that way - the devil has to get his wages too!

There is the alternative way, stuff from the very un-rich writer, which might take you on a trawl through the backstreets of here and there, but would you really care to follow that route yourself? I sure wouldn´t!

Was it D H Lawrence who wrote an early book on Travels in Sardinia? So long ago - so much forgotten - who says age comes alone? Another person, George Sand, wrote about Mallorca, but what was current then...

I fear you will probably have to settle for picking bits from whatever you find!

I've wondered about this too, there doesn't seem to be a lot in the way of writing about the experience of travel. I spent a long time driving overland trucks, drove from London to Cape Town and back, also London to Kathmandu and back, hundreds of really good stories. I also know loads of other guys who all have amazing stories about traveling rather than destinations. Maybe there's a market for hearing about this stuff.
