hello, the plastic model effect is coming from the perception that we have of a depth of field, that and the compressed effect of a long lens. we are used to see small DOF on model and when it's applied on real life, we fell a bit lost... I thought that effect on this kind of scene was the way to go. by the way, I didn't use a tilt and shift lens, but photoshop. romain romain bayle picturesFunny, I thought EXACTLY the same thing...

I got the same effect for this photo using a center spot focus filter and no PS..

Looking at your web-site, I'd say you have a little experience in doing that kind of work and more... :-))
Are you the one who did some (or all) of the art work in the movie 'Sin City'?
If yes, congratulations! That's quite an accomplishment.

Oh yes, I can imagine that. Very exciting project to work on. I always admire excellence in illustration and animation - this movie is one of my favorites - not for the story line - but certainly for its artistic merits.

Don't care for the third. Love the toy train effect on the first two. And without a tilt shift or lens baby. Woo! Must play in photoshop to figure that one out. Probably need faster glass than I have at the long end.

Romain, sorry for the delay and thank you for your kind comment.
As we all know, photography depicts reality as is. :-)).
I used a macro lens (nikon 105 mm VR, handheld, no flash). The images show scenes from the large and elaborate miniature train set in Hamburg, Germany. So, no tilt and shift lens or PS work to change 'reality' was needed. The bicyclists for example are only half an inch in size and there was very little light: only dim neon light with a few fast running spots to indicate quite a speedy change between a sunny day and moonlight. I preferred the 'night'.
It is an ongoing personal project about people and what they love to do - like the guys in Hamburg building a dream world of their own.
