Nikon D700 post

The Nikon D700 uses an "FX" sensor...not a "DX" sensor. The DX sensor is the classic Nikon 1.5X crop factor sensor. Also, refurb is spelled with a "u" not an "e", and refers to the refurbishment of a quality or defect problem, not a line extension, which, presumably, the successor to the 5D will be.

Is this typical of the price spread..US vs Europe?  Paying $1000+ more in Europe seems a bit excessive.

DX was a typo and has now been corrected.

As far as price goes, European pricing includes VAT, while US and Canadian prices do not. The US does not have a Federal sales tax but does have state taxes. Canada has both. There still is a price differential, but it's not as great as it seems.

The reality though is that if someone in Europe wants to buy high-end photo gear and is willing to bring it home without declaring it to customs, one can usually fly to New York, have a pleasant weekend vacation, see the sites, a show,  have a couple of good meals, and do so for less than the cost of the price differential on about a $5,000 gear purchase.

This differential between US and rest-of-world pricing has been a real thorn in the side of Canadians for decades. Recently with the US dollar devaluing to par or below against the Canadian dollar even math challenged Canadians are able to see at a glance how much they're paying for goods (like cars) that are substantially more than just a few miles away in the US. As a consequence many Canadian importers, distributors, and retailers have lowered their prices. The auto industry is of note. Epson, for example, set their US and Canadian prices at par last year.

Not depressing, look on it as the New Freedom. The British one ended up making us almost bankrupt, lost us many lives for nothing, so wave it a fond farewell and open a bottle of Champagne!

Depressing yes, but where's the surprise?

If you take a low IQ (possibly brain damaged?) individual and put him in charge of the country, can you really expect an outcome much different from what we have?

I, for one, am not surprised..
