lost .jpg thumbnail data

Greetings.

 I have had to recover some images from a bad external drive, and found out that most of them now don't appear in Windows' folders with their preview picture.

 I have batchfiled them in PS to recreate their thumbnail info...but this is a destructive process and I am trying to avoid this!!

 Is there another way to "add" the thumbnail data to an image without re-processing it in its entirety?
