RED DSLRs!!!

I think in the next 3 years there will be more dramatic changes in the photo and film industry than we saw in the last 10.

It's pretty clear from the Nikon announcement (D90) that mainstream camera makers are ready to party with hybrids in the prosumer arena. In 2 years they'll build the same technology into the pro SLRs.

That's the way it could go. Sooner than later, I guess.

My view is that his quotes are mostly defensive...

Although neither are even close to being true universal still/video devices, video enabled DSLRs like the D90 are probably more of threat for the Scarlet than the Scarlet is a threat for DSLRs...

The D90 in itself is not that important. Its actual level of performance will for sure give some indication about where the consumer industry stands, but the trend should scare the hell out of Red as far as consumer business goes.

If anyone wants to comment on the usability of the D90 - which I am interested as a video tool (and I suppose a D3 backup) - I started a thread on the video board - responses - nada - comments welcome

I think still photographers who arent looking a moving have thier heads in the sand - especially in mid level commercial sphere - top end production will bew able to afford two crews but not those with smaller budgets

Why start a thread about a RED film camera? It's not medium format. In fact it's a very different beast. People who think this will replace still cameras for more than a few niche purposes are kidding themselves.

I had a look at the Mysterium specs and as far as I can tell you get:

- a very wide aspect ratio, nearly 2:1
- no control whatsoever over exposure time
- no variable ISO setting
- zero compatibility with flash
- serious power requirements if you want use continuous lighting on location
- no used market for cheap parts or lenses
- only 12 MP
- less dynamic range than MFDB
(if I'm wrong about any of these please show us all a link with more info)

All for $17,500, and that's just the body.

If anyone else introduced a camera with a fixed ISO setting and a fixed shutter speed at this price and resolution, the forum would trash it immediately, and rightly so.

if i asume right, a f stop is represented by 6dB (because 6dB increase means double the voltage and 6dB decrease half the voltage, as far as  i can remember lightcalculations are based on voltage...)

so 66dB would result in 11 fstop... not that bad i think...

if the red has a fixed iso and fixed shutter no one would buy it i think...

Even if there is some control over shutter speed, I'd like to know how it's possible to achieve a 10 second exposure from a camera running at 30fps
