Any new lighting gear shown at Photokina?

As I said before I am looking to invest in unique/specialized lighting pieces and I would love to buy a pair of Briese focus 77 S, I assume it's compatible with both Flash & HMI...? I haven't seen similar umbrella/product from any other company...

Any combo/configuration flash and HMI you have in mind to go in tandem with pair of focus 77 S?

I can't find the prices on net, it seems like not many stores carry them.

I've used them with Briese's own HMI.  Really nice.  You can have an assistant hold one on a light stand, a battery pack on his/her waist with the balast.  Doesn't attract much attention, you don't have to put down sticks.  For strobe, I've heard you can have it modified for Bron or Profoto.  They use a special stick light flash head with a reflector that is built into the shaft.  Nice.  

The big Briese  is/was about $20k USD last I asked at Pier 59.

It's available through the Konova store on ebay. I had to email them, as they don't have it listed in their ebay store. They are based in Seoul, I believe.

I went ahead and ordered the 220cm model at about $1k US delivered. There's also a 180cm model that is slightly cheaper.

Less than a week later, a huge oblong box, over 2m long, arrived.

It's a very nice light for the price, and comes complete with the rolling stand, 5kg counter weight, and an empty sandbag. It is not as adjustable as the Bron -- the head can be extended out about a meter from its set position at the outer edge of the umbrella.  The umbrella has one fixed open position (as seen in the pictures) and can also be closed a bit by sliding the central tube forward.

I've only used it for a couple shoots now, and need to experiment more. The light is very nice though -- punchy, constrasty, very flattering skin.

Briese doesn't do these conversions anymore, at least not officially...but you can llok around for a converted one on ebay Germany. There some around and keep popping up from time to time. And rather for cheap...

Some electricians can and will do it, although they did get into some trouble with Briese for advertising their services.

I think any good Speedotron tech could do the conversion.

I'm not sure....the difference is in the "Zündspannung" ( triggervoltage) of the elinchrom/ profoto  modified heads compared to the original briese ones. Better not to blow a 850 Euro flashtube, rather buy a used head on ebay for 150 Euros, I guess...

what do you mean...from their website it looks they are still making strobes...though they renamed all of their generators and streamlined their offers

The trouble with the Briese lies in the odd working of the Flash power packs or generators, as they are commonly known in Europe. You figure it out for yourself.

Oh, yeah, Briese bumps up his prices by about 10% over the last one every year so you may expect a 10% increase in the pdf's list prices come October 08.

I understand that Briese has dropped his White finish (S) from the Focus save the 77cm model. Only the Silver finish (H) is available now. Briese's website is in need of serious updating as it does not show the latest products like the 44cm and 125cm Focus reflectors.

It is great stuff used mainly by cinematographers although Peter Lindbergh and Stephen Wayda are fans.

The umbrella looks to me like the Asian knock-offs mentioned earlier.

There are some other makes from china that are knockoffs, though I know nothing about the quality of them.

Actually I believe that many companies get a number of accessories from other manufacturers (some in asia) and then relabel them.
a number of lights from profoto are relabelled pieces from an european manufacturer.

The giant reflectors and all umbrellas from Profoto are actually made and manifactured in Sweden (and i know that because i tried to get the same factory to make me some custom umbrellas once and was turned down because of their contract with Profoto =)

As for how to spot knockoffs, it can be hard in any type of field. Just get the item from a reputable dealer that you trust instead off ebay.
