USB Flash drive as backup

Is anyone using USB flash drives as a form of permanent backup?

Let's say I have about 500 GB of photos, but only 16 GB of "hero" raws.  Is it feasible to use a USB flash drive to back those up?  I'm trying to think of the easiest way to do multiple-location backups,  i.e. I don't really like having to take a HDD back and forth to my office.

You might also consider backing them up to an online location. Most ISPs give you a small amount of web space for free with your account. You could back them up to that, and then have access to them even if your home burned to the ground, or if you needed them while vacationing in Fiji or something. Most of those companies also do frequent backups on their own. I have a special online rathole where I keep a number of critical files like that.

Just be aware of the media's limitation of block erasure and limited read/write cycles.
