Sharing hard disks between 2 macs

I've an iMac and a G5, share the internet connection with a switch (hub). I'd like to pick up a terrabyte drive and put everything for the next year onto it - and run Lightroom (both computers have LR), but share the catalog and files. I can't seem to find the correct combo of 'accounts', 'sharing', 'permissions' and such. Anyone any ideas? Both computers can see each other, but don't see any drives.
Do I need other software? We're secure - I don't need 'server' software, only two Macs on our intranet.

 You cannot share a LR catalog on a network drive. The photos may reside on a network drive, but each computer must have its own catalog, preferably on an internal drive.

I'm HOPING I've stated this incorrectly: I'd like to have a drive that can be accessed by another computer on my intranet. If I create the (new) catalog on that drive (instead of my system drive), then I should be able to access that catalog, no? In any case, my immediate question is how to access a drive on my G5 - from my iMac (via ethernet hub).

No.

You can only have a Lightroom catalog on a local drive.

Your catalog may include images which are on a network drive (or even on an off-line drive), but the catalog must be on a local disk. No workaround.

OK, I give. Still, I've placed my catalog file on a disk that's an external - but I guess that's still local. That works OK. I guess another computer couldn't access that catalog.

In any case, nobody can access that disk at all - I can't figure out how to allow this - so any help would be terrific.

And hey, what's with Adobe - why CAN'T we use lightroom on a network? Or will this be a value-added extra?

You must have sharing enabled on the computer you wish to access. The disk must be mounted on the computer you wish to access (you should see it in Finder on the computer it is connected to).

On the other computer (the one you are doing access from) you should see an icon in Finder for the computer you have set up with sharing. Click on the icon and click on Connect As, you will be asked to log in (unless you have set up the shared computer with no login password, not a good idea). Log in with a valid user name and password for the shared computer. Depending on your setup in System Preferences > Sharing on the shared computer, you may need to give the admin user name and password for the shared computer to get access to the disk you want. You should then see an icon for the disk on the shared computer.
