What is your favorite location?

New England. I may be biased because I grew up there, but, aside from the American Southwest, I feel that New England is the most aesthetically unique area of the U.S. Stone walls, oak and maple trees, lighthouses, rocky beaches, old churches, old factories, fishing villages, covered bridges, great fall color. You almost couldn't go wrong even if you tried.

I have to agree with New England -- the northeast in general. I was in Ithaca, NY last fall for one absolutely beautiful and crisp day, and was blown away by how much was going on around me, visually. I miss that area.

My corn-ball answer would be: my yard. I spend a huge percentage of my time shooting there. Then again, I am a honey-I-shrunk-the-landscape kind of guy.

For me, the answer is "almost anywhere", the key to successful pictures is to look around you and find things that other people look at but don't "see". Macro photography especially has many opportunities for this. A weed growing out of a crack in the sidewalk, a stream flowing over some rocks by the side of the road, a frog sitting on a rock in a backyard pond--all of these can be wonderful photographic opportunities whether you are in downtown Chicago or Muir Woods or rural Michigan or Yellowstone or a mountain road in California or wherever.

Ofcourse you can take amazing pictures in any location, but I do not agree that it doesn't matter where you are. What is more exciting then the discovery of a new linspiring ocation. As a working amateur I depend on weekends and holidays. Especially the last one. I was an inspired photographer in India, Rajastan (but I missed nature possibilities over there, which gives me a good reason to go back!); I discovered wild life photography as my major photographic ambition on my honeymoon to Kenya and the reason that I will join Michaels workshop to Tanzania; I picked up macro because of my mothers beautiful garden ....

I think it is fascinating to share experiences about photo locations or situations because it might be a realistic opportunity to discover something new in this beautiful world.

Atomic City, Idaho without a doubt.  If you haven't made reservations do so today.  Never mind the high incidence of brain cancer, Atomic City will provide you with that psychodelic red and orange that you can't even find in Utah.

It dosen't matter. To me, it is the mood I'm in more than anything else. The back yard, the front door, Arizona, Yemen....You could drop me in the most visually exciting place in the world, if I'm tense, tired, stressed out: no picture will be any good - I could not see, concentrate or enjoy. You could put me in the worst industrial pit you could think of even in foul weather, if I'm relaxed, focused and in a good mood: I could come home with the most amazing visual impressions and would tell everyone what a great location that was. For me, photography is such a personal thing, that I find it difficult to respond to questions like 'What is a good place to take pictures in Europe?' My respose would be: Just go and see or I would talk about places I learned to love - most likely not because of the photographic value, but because I had a good time there and the place somehow touched me.
