Use iPhone/iTouch as Phase One viewer?

There has been much discussion  here and on other forums regarding the use of a netbook for critical focus for MFDB's.  The displays are obviously a MAJOR deficiency of the Phase backs, if not most others, and we are all (I think) struggling for work-arounds, or missing the true potential of our backs by missing focus on too high  a percentage of our shots.

I would say this to Phase One: write a "dumbed down" version of Capture One as an iPhone app., allowing  the IPhone to be used to convert RAWs to viewable JPEGs, for focus, lighting and exposure review, and possibly as backup storage (store JPEGs to the iPhone, RAWs to the card).  The connection could be made using a firewire cable, which, while not as nifty as  Leaf's use of bluetooth, would allow users of existing Phase backs to upgrade the usability of their woefully inadequate displays. While shooting tethered in the studio may work (for some), taking a netbook out in the field is a cumbersome, heavy proposition.  Clipping an iPhone to a tripod is a far more workable solution than carrying a second tripod and netbook while trudging across the tundra...

A Firewire 400 to iPhone/iPod cable is available.

Only older iPods can use the firewire cable. There is no compatibility with firewire in the iPhone- the 3G and 3Gs cannot even charge over firewire, nevermind transfer data by anything other than USB.

That IS disappointing to learn. What about a firewire to bluetooth transmitter? I recently read an old article that made reference to the use of these for firewire equipped video cameras, but I have not been able to actually confirm that they exist.

There is no advantage in converting Firewire to bluetooth, as the bluetooth interface will be a bottleneck. I think it is limited to 1Mbit/s currently. However, it matters not. The iPhone screen resolution is so limited that there is no point in transmitting a full 60MP image to the phone in order to display it on the small screen. Only the portions you want to see on the screen (if the image is viewed in 100%) or a small scaled down version of the full image need to be transmitted to the phone. For that purpose, Wifi, USB, 3G or perhaps even Bluetooth is fully sufficient.

I agree, there's no need to send a full size IIQ raw to the viewer - a JPEG for critical focus review or a liveview, is all that would be necessary.
