That does it. I'm going for one (as soon as I have enough pennies). I remember that my first RRS L-plate seemed exorbitantly expensive before I bought it. But their stuff is just so well-designed and well-made that it is worth every penny.

Hai I am using the BH-40 in combination with Nikon 3dx + an L-plate.

I use it for achitectural photography-

The Ballhead is small, lightweight and very stong. I like it.  Beautiful craftsmenship

I use it even on the largest tripod of Manfrotto.

I must say the L-plate makes it all perfect. You now have a basis for Panorama equipment etc.

Because of that I bought the PCL1.
Now I use it on top of the BH-40. A bit awkward combination , but it works for me- leveling has never been more easy.

A quick comment about L-plates:

If you do go for one (I live by 'em, I find precise positioning with any tripod head harder for portrait shots otherwise) -- take a look at the Kirk L-plate for your camera as well.  I'd had RRS plates in the past, and they are unquestionably well-made, but the Kirk plate for 7D seemed (and I'm comparing plates from different cameras here so you should be a little skeptical) excellently constructed as well, just as strong, and (because of design) even lighter.
