Adobe RGB or RGB ?

Hi!

 When profiling my monitor, I am asked to input the target profile before the profiling begins.
Do I select AdobeRGB1998 or RGB?

 Similarly, I have my monitor's standard-install profile (Dell2409) in the same color profile folder.
When should I ever need to use this as a color target before calibration?

Definitely AdobeRGB and your Dell profile will be replaced by the new profile you are creating through the calibration and profiling process.

What software asks for this target profile?  And, the Dell 2409 is only a "normal gamut" monitor...  Why would you use Adobe RGB?

what software?
why wouldn't you just want to profile the native gamut?

normally you tell it you want say D65 and some TRC

some software lets you feed it profiles to try copy and there can be reasons to do that but I wonder if that is what you are after here
