I would recommend getting a card reader for your computer and putting your memory card in the reader to browse. That way you don't have to have the camera on to browse images. If you are running the camera on battery power while connected via FireWire, low battery level could cause your problem. But it could be an issue with your computer as well.

Hi,
I read somewhere in the Canon 1Ds manual that you should download a patch from Windows (I assume you have windows) which has something to do with the IEEE 1394 connection.
Maybe this helps.

I'm having some trouble with my 1Ds dropping the firewire connection while using the fileviewer or zoombrowser. After about 5 minutes the connection drops and cannot be reestablished. I have auto turn-off set to OFF and have the most recent firmware update and zoombrowser update. This has happened before the firmware update as well. I'm wondering if it's an issue with my firewire card and not the camera, although some times I'm unable to turn the camera off (it doesn't go off when I turn the switch to OFF). I've put in a tech support case to Canon, but wanted to check here if anyone else was having this problem.

I have a Delkin PicturePad that I use in the field to store photos on, but download directly from the camera when I've been out on short day trips from home. The camera is always on the AC adapter when I download from the camera, so running out of power is not a cause. I received a series of suggestions back from Canon that I have yet to try. I'll post my results once I give those a shot.
