Every time I see this it reminds me of Ansel Adams' 'Arches, North Court, Mission San Xavier del Bac' image.

Same light and challenging brightness range. Of course the master tamed it with the zone system. I'm currently reading his excellent book 'Examples - The Making of 40 Photographs' - a fascinating read and very informative of the zone system for those interested.

As regards the zone system, I'm under the impression that has been replaced with ETTR, in the digital age. Is this not correct?

Nevertheless, Michael's shot of the abandoned hotel challenges the DR capability of any camera.

It's a fascinating example of light and shade.

Spanish property boom and ultimate bust...

Empty apartments, hotels and houses are very common sights today. If you have a couple of spare million bucks you could do very well indeed out of another's misery! Sadly, those boats are still way outta sight. Maybe because of those problematic spare millions. I was so much better off when I lived in pesetas.

In the case of this hotel in San Miguel, it wasn't a property bust that lead to it's abandonment. There are many new hotels going up here and the town is doing quite well.

This hotel was foolishly built at the foot of a dam, and during the first heavy rain during construction it became clear that building the hotel there was not a good idea at all.

It was abandoned, and now no one knows who will pay to take it down.

Well, at least someone is making money on it. Cost me 100 Pesos ($8) to bribe the guard to let us in the site.  Smiley
