Ngorongoro crater - Help picking a crop

Which, if any, d'you prefer?

My thoughts: I like the wide crop because it captures just how startling it was driving through mist so thick you could only see 1m ahead of the bonnet then coming across this view.

Second crop focusses on what was startling with less mist.

Like the size contrast of small man and big field.
Also less grain

2 works better for me when you crop it more, taking the crop to just above the bottom of the cloud.

I would do it this way but then enlarge the image to the dimensions you prefer.
For me it is less cluttered and less distraction.

I actually like the second one. I think it puts the walking man in a much stronger position. The image is about him to me and I think it really puts the focus on him. Just my two cents though.

It depends what you want the viewer to focus most of their attention on.  The first version emphasizes the man & clouds.  The second version emphasizes the crater landscape in the background.

I think Lisa has it right. One can crop seven ways to Sunday and still make an effective statement. It is neither worse nor better, but a matter of what you want to emphasize and/or express. Having said that, some subject-matter, clearly guides the way a crop should go. I note in the larger version, the dark triangle strip has some information, which in the context of this powerfully graphic image is a distraction. I think the dark triangle should remain black as possible and reinforce the power of the silhouetted man in his environment.
