I have installed Photoshop CS6beta aka Superstition which includes the Camera Raw 7 plugin . Does anyone think it would be possible to copy the Camera Raw plugin to the CS5 plugin folder to have Camera Raw 7 functionality in CS5?
Has anyone attempted this with success?

It will not work, ACR is too tightly integrated with the Photoshop code.

It sounds like you are running CS6 beta on your main machine if you want to copy ACR 7 "to the CS5 plug-in folder." I think Adobe advises against that. As for actually doing it, why not first test how ACR 7 works with CS6? Then copy it to the CS5 plug-in folder and tell us how that works out for you. But really, it seems that you have ACR 7 functionality with CS6 right now, so why even think about it? But far be it from me to discourage anyone from going where no one else has gone before. Mike |

I tried copying the Camera Raw.8bi from C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS6\File Formats\Camera Raw.8bi to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS5\File Formats\Camera Raw.8bi (after renaming the ACR 6.7rc Camera Raw.8bi to Camera Raw.old8bi(in case I needed to go back, and I did!) and IT DOESN"T WORK in CS5!!!
Looking at the CS5 properties, it reports ACR as 7.0, BUT, you CANNOT OPEN raw image files directly in CS5 Bridge, nor can files be moved from LR4 to CS5 with the 7.0 plugin installed.
Gotta wait for shipping CS6 to get the full benefit of LR4 to CS6 compatibility.

No, but they could have updated ACR 7 with the camera support they have in ACR 6.7. Not doing that is really stupid. |

Updating newer cameras is handled by converting to DNG using the FREE converter. Even after ACR 7 comes out, that will be necessary thanks to manufacturers insistence of creating new proprietary raw files. Why should they give away new functionality as they have in ACR 7? Again, they ain’t stupid. They are very smart. They allow you to use newer camera generated raw files in older versions with a free converter. But you want new functionality like PV2012, you have to upgrade. |

Where? In something other than CS6? Not going to happen (why would they do this, spend the time and money to code a newer plug-in to work with an older version of Photoshop)? Oh well, it didn't hurt to try.
Camera Raw7 and Photoshop CS5 gets you a message that says, "This version of Camera Raw is not compatible with this version of Photoshop, or something like that.
I didn't really think it would work and I plan on using CS6 beta until I purchase the update.

no, it is not integrated... it is just a matter of simple check ( if (...) {...} else {...} ) against photoshop/bridge version that started it and that's all. |

We had to finish up engineering work on Camera Raw 7 several weeks ago -- before new models like the 5D III and D800 were available or even announced. Thus it was impossible to get support for these new models into the plug-in. (Exception: DNG files from new models like the Pentax K-01 will work fine.)
If you want raw support for these models in CS5, please download the Release Candidate (RC) version of Camera Raw 6.7 from Adobe Labs.
