Is there an easy way to share videos on my own website - ie. not embedded youtube or Vimeo videos? I'm aware of the bandwidth requirements.

Open source and free for personal use is a requirement. HTML5 preferred over Flash.

Why not vim or youtube - they both have various 'privacy'/ embedd options

It seems that many even big companies find YT or Vim the best nowadays

What about just a QT file sitting on the server embedded in a page.. or show one at maybe 480 and offer a download option for 1080

I like downloading and watching later .. maybe that just me

I think when you send dailies or first edits out to a client, you need some form of proprietary protection.  Not many client's, large or small, want their video and branding out in the wild west with everyone viewing it until they are ready to launch and today we see utoob and vimeeeeo as a easy way to send out info but they're are better ways, just more costsly and make you run your own server and have your webmaster on speed dial.

A lot of us, client's included see utoob and vimeeeeo as a secondary thought, but as the numbers suggest, an interesting video out in the world weird web can get a lot more play than paid for broadcast, flashing in-store displays and cable teeeveee.

Showing your latest work is also a ying yang type of thing.  You want the world and potential clients to see it, you just don't want some client that has more reach than you and  your client copying it faster than you can get it out, because then it looks like the idea was theirs's not your's and your client's.

That's always been a tough decision.

The easiest way? Put up an MP4 file and link it from your page. (Compressor's pre-sets for Apple devices are a good jumping off point for export options if you need them, most packages will have a sensible default for MP4 which you can tweak)

Nearly all modern browsers will stream the video from a regular URL link, or let the customer download with right-click and save as. Chances are, that'll just work.

If it doesn't you'll need to check with your web hosting provider that things are set up right for that. specifically the MIME types need to be set right in your web server software: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_media_type

If you need to restrict access, set up a password protected area to contain the files. Depends on which software your web server is running, but have a look at .htaccess for the simplest way which a lot of web servers support: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Htaccess

This won't stop anyone swapping the downloaded videos, but if that's not a concern (eg showing previews to clients) this may be all you need.

Cheers, Hywel

A couple of links. (html 5)

http://videojs.com/#getting-started

http://camendesign.com/code/video_for_everybody

Both work fine and fast.

There is also an alternative to youtubevimeo wich is called exposureroom. More film makers and pros orientated, way less traffic than the others, better HD quality.(720), clean politics.
