I know a way to add a border in PS by making the canvas 50 pixels larger than the image and filling the border with a chosen color.
Can I do something like this in LightRoom 4 for jpeg files that I output?

I noticed
the tutorial I wrote for watermarks and borders
was a bit dated (several years) so I just deleted the plugin and associated software and started from scratch. Everything still works. Don't be afraid to use this despite the age of the piece, everything works fine.

I created a droplet of a Photoshop action that automatically adds a white canvas around the image. In the export menu of Lightroom I enable the droplet so that when Lightroom has created the .jpeg it automatically runs the file through the Ps action. Setting everything up was a bit tedious but I'm satisfied with the results.

Thats a great way to do it. Droplets are under-utilised or at least seem under represented in LR I feel as they are incredibly powerful.

Yes, it's the way I would do this too. Instead of launching them through the export route, I just prefer to define them as additional external editors.
Another advantage of droplets is that they can be baked from actions which include scripts, which is handy because scripts can contain logic like calculating the size of a border from the size and orientation of the picture.

Definitely Mogrify Plugin.
No need for any Droplet or Photoshop at all

Mogrify works great on OSX 10.7 - recommended.
Install was a one step easy deal.

Glad it worked out. I use it on every export for one feature or the other and wouldn't want to be without it.
