Snuggled between the Great Himalayas to the south and the Zanskar mountains to the north, Zanskar valley is one of the most remote valleys of India. It is takes three full days of driving to reach Zanskar from Jammu, the nearest railhead. Zanskar remains cut off from the world for more than six months of the due to snow in the Himalayan passes. What Zanskar lacks in connectivity, it more than makes up for, in its spectacular landscapes. I spent about a week traveling in, and photographing the Zanskar region. I have put up an illustrated travelogue of my visit on my site. It might be of interest to someone planning to visit Zanskar or Ladakh. You reach the travelogue on this link : http://somendras.com/?p=728#more-728

Beautiful photos and an interesting place. This is off-topic sort of, but have you every considered using a roof tent instead of a ground tent? I've used roof tents in Africa and the are very comfortable. They're usually equipped with more of a real mattress than what you can reasonably use in a ground tent. They also facilitate making and breaking camp much faster as they just fold up on the roof of your vehicle.

I have never used a roof tent but I can see their advantages. Would love to have one, but unfortunately, in India, they are not available off the shelf. I have been planning to fabricate one for some time but it hasn't happened yet :-).

Technically we can. But there is a lot of red tape involved and the duty is also quite a bit. Even so, do send a link if you know someone who makes these in South Africa. I will give it a try .

Several proprietary brands of rooftop tents are available in Australia, including Hannibal. ARB makes a very good version.
It would be worth investigating whether ARB is represented in India - either as themselves or via an agency. ARB sell a very wide range of accessories for four wheel drive vehicles - the market for long-range off-road four wheel drive touring vehicles and the accessories required to specify these vehicles thus in Australia is huge. Other brands to consider also include TJM.
I would be very surprised if there is not some representation of these companies in India.
Regards
Tony Jay

Regards Tony Jay We are familiar with ARB in India, they make great products. I have friends who use ARB differential locks, winches, winch bumpers and other products. Didn't know that they also make roof tents. Will get in touch with them. Thanks for the help . regards
