I was wondering where the 1:1 previews used in the develop module stored, and if I use a SSD drive for that storage would that make develop module quicker to respond?

In the Camera Raw cache which is different places depending on the OS you are running, which you don't bother to mention. When you do, somebody will be able to tell you.

You can place the Camera Raw cache where you want it. E.g. on an SSD.

The Develop module doesn't have "previews", per se. Pretty much everything that is displayed on screen is rendered on the fly each time by the CPU, even when just scrolling from image to image.
The Adobe Camera Raw Cache will save some of the base level rendering information (demoisaicing, etc) but it's really just a small part of the image that's being displayed and the rest needs to be rendered. Putting the ACR cache on a faster drive like an SSD will improve things, but by only a very small amount.
Really, the only way to significantly speed up the Develop module is to get a faster CPU.

For Mac the default location is: Users/Your User Name/ Library/ Caches/ Adobe Camera Raw
You can move that in the Camera Raw preferences (which also happens to show the current location).
