Real World Color Management by Bruce Fraser et al. is a must have book on the subject.
Color Management for Photographers: Hands on Techniques for Photoshop Users, by Andrew Rodney is another superb source of information on the subject.
I have all of the above. I highly recommend the purchase and use of each. I refer to them very frequently when I can not get my noggin wrapped around a problem.
There is also a lot of free information here on Luminous Landscape, both in the forum as well as on the home page in the tutorials, essays and in the understanding series.
You also can pose specific questions and hear many different theories and opinions.
