Muir Beach at sunset

I've been trying to improve my landscape photo composition, and simultaneously have been
experimenting with lighting and exposures that make for dramatic monochrome conversions
.
I can't decide if I succeeded with this one (color and B&W versions attached).
Any comments would be appreciated.
Thanks

As far as the composition goes, you have all the "weight" on the left hand side and so it is imbalanced.
I think you handled the exposure well and the conversion is OK. The blank sky is a big negative and provides nothing in the way of drama.
Wrong day. Go back and shoot in some stormy or threatening weather.

Tonal range is ok and on the positive side I think you've done a good job on the classy black sand, negatives yer agree with Walt....the sky is empty and stark it offers little to the image.

Compositionally I don't think that you have quite succeeded in your goal.
I am not sure about the light either - perhaps it was better than reflected in the image.
However the only way to improve is to be out there hitting the shutter-button so this image (and likely many others that you have shot) serves a crucial purpose in moving your photography on.
I look forward to seeing more of your images.

Thanks for the replies. I have to say it is great to have a forum like this to "recalibrate", and I will definitely keep working on it.
