I see it as "stripe" to the point of loosing the creek in the foreground.  "Stripes" are down the road a little bit.

C'mon, Bruce, it's Rhine II, but with an interesting background. The river needs to stay in.

OK, stripes, but because the Rhine bisects the flat land between us and the hill, it resonates in that space more than it does beyond.  Alternately, I suggest more foreground.

Sadly, it doesn't have the commercial value of Rhine II. There's no river, in fact: it's Red Rock Canyon, Nevada. There is, however, plenty more foreground but I thought it lacked any particular interest. I was more taken by the lowering sky.

I prefer the uncropped also, feels more balanced and that foreground is not that terrible as you might think.

the foreground. "grounds" the image, giving the mountains and the stripes a sense of being somewhere.

Interesting. I've adjusted the uncropped shot a little, applying a mask in LR to the foreground to reduce both exposure and saturation a bit. Looking at it and reflecting upon it, I now agree with the consensus. It's better as I first saw it.
