30" nec 3090WQXi 2560 x 1600 support on 15" macbook pro

My question is, can this be done?
My machine is the older 15" macbook pro, 2011 generation, with the 2.4GZ processor and i7 processor. I have 2 usb and 1 thunderbolt ports.
I have the apple thunderbolt to mini Dvi plug. When I attach the NEC 30" the max resolution I can get is 1900 x 1080. Apple told me that is
due to the thunderbolt to mini-dvi plug, in that it only supports external resolution up to 1900 x 1080 and that if I need to go higher, I have to
have a Thunderbolt enabled monitor. The rep I spoke with said that even if I had a HDMI connection on the back of the monitor which I don't,
I would still be limited to the 1900 x 1080 since I am going from thunderbolt to HDMI.
I just am curious about this, and wanted to double check. Nothing wrong with the NEC 30", but it seems strange to me that I can't get the correct
resolution on the monitor from the macbookpro.
Any hints or help would be greatly appreciated.
Paul

Thanks, that got it working, I had asked the apple tech support if that was the correct adapter, but they kept telling me that no matter what, I would not get the
2560 x 1600 unless I used only a thunderbolt monitor.
Works fine with correct resolution with the correct apple adapter.
