On another note, if you're only in San Francisco for a short time, you could just stay there.  Giving yourself a couple of days there to include scouting sessions then returning when the light is right could get you more in tune with what's here.  There are lots of opportunities for intimate landscapes along the bay and ocean coastline as well as in Golden Gate park.
