Empty carts

If its not a stupid question what do you do with empty Epson 220ml ink carts  do you just toss them or can they be recycled??

or heaven forbid is there any ink left in them.

www.tastarsupply.com has a recycle program for Epson Pro printers....  You get a few bucks in store credit towards future purchases too.

In 80ml cartridges there is about 20% of the ink left.  I extract the ink and put it in refillable cartridges.  Same syringe works for both extraction and filling.

Mein Gott! That's pretty atrocious. I recently explored one of my iPF5100 130ml carts and measured only 5ml residual - about 4%. Scaled to this size, the Epson carts would have 20ml more unavailable, worth about $12 at Canon's prices.

Are you taking them out when you get the low warning?
Printing with a 3880 you should be waiting until the printer actually stops before exchanging your cart?
Using this procedure I would expect 5% (4ml)but nothing near 20%.

I was taking them out at low ink warning.  Would be interesting to see how much is actually left when printing stopped.

Mfg. says to leave them in until printer actually stops.
All that warning means is its time to order a new one.
I have several carts showing the low warnings that have been printing for over a month.

I just wish when the cleaning cycle starts and says that there's not enough ink for the cleaning, it would tell you which cartridge is the culprit.  I had to swap out 5 cartridges today to get a cleaning done when only one of the colours was clogged.

Hi Mike,

I've checked a few times on the Epson site(http://www.epson.ca/cgi-bin/ceStore/Recycle/RecycleProgram.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes) and have called Epson Canada as well.  They didn't seem to know how to get in touch with this company(Epson Canada Limited, c/o MTC – Door # 4, 220 Water Street, Whitby, Ontario L1N 0G9), so I finally Googled the name and found it myself.  I have far too many carts to mail(about 200 from the 4000, 7600 and 9900 printers), so I wanted to know if they still recycle these carts and their hours as well.  They do recycle and I am sending along the URL for the company.  If you have a lot of carts it would probably be in your best interest to drop them off as I will be doing.  I believe you are located somewhere in the GTA, so that shouldn't be a problem.  Save them up and make one trip perhaps.  Luckily I'm practically around the corner from them(15 minute drive) in Oshawa, so I'll be delivering a load of carts very soon.  I hope this helps Mike.  Find the company URL below.

Hi All

Thanks for all the info. I had 10 mins spare this morning so took one of the carts apart WOW what a lot of ink left the whole bag weighed in at 35g .

Now the question is what do I do with it  ?? I'm sure you will have ideas on that.

Put it in a refillable cartridge and use it (if it is not too old).  

Some people buy used cartridges (just the larger sizes) on eBay just to extract the remaining ink.  I would imagine that some of the ink bought on eBay might be fairly old though.  Same thing happens with new cartridges -- extracting the ink of new large cartridges to refill smaller cartridges because the cost per ml is so much cheaper.

So lets see, maybe 25 extractable ml of ink ink per cartridge times 200 cartridges times the price per ml of 80 ml cartridges is about $3500.  But then there is the time involved.
