Shot at Inks Lake, near Austin.

Canon 1dx with 800mm f5.6,
ISO 3200, 1/2000s f5.6 Hand Held from a boat at sunset.
 
Basic processing in Lightroom 4, fullframe/uncropped.

Really fine shot.  You might consider taming the bright grass by the feet.

I would say that everything in the background should go into less contrast, less clarity, less exposure, less saturation, so that the bird really stands out.

Great capture at a great moment. You should have a read of kencameron's post regarding "beautiful" images overdone, though. (http://www.luminous-landscape.com/forum/index.php?topic=80552.0) The blues are just too intense, even if it is a Great Blue Heron. There's beauty in subtlety.

I agree with Terry. It's a fine shot, but I've never seen a Great Blue Heron whose blue was as saturated as that. I feel if you backed off a bit, it would be excellent.
