5D samples at DPreview

I'll be very interested to see how the noise at high ISOs compares with the 20D on a pixel for pixel basis.

Large pixels are supposed to have an intrinsic advantage regarding noise levels, but this wasn't the case when the 1Ds was released shortly after the D60. Despite the 1Ds having larger pixels than the D60, noise was actually slightly greater. Of course, over all it was less, for equal size images, due to the greater number of pixels of the 1Ds, so the fact that pixel for pixel, noise was greater did not seem of much concern to anyone.

I expect a similar situation will exist when comparing noise levels of the 5D with the 20D. However, if those larger pixels are actually less noisy than the 20D pixels, it'll be a great bonus, and might be the deal clincher for me.

The bridge shot made with the 24-105/4L IS lens looks VERY nice. There's only a very slight hint of CA in the extreme corners, and overall detail is quite good. Overall I'd say it's in the same class as the 70-200/2.8L IS and the 24-70/2.8L. I'm thinking I might want one...

Joke aside, the high ISO shots are impressive, but the DR potentially less so (although it might be a metering problem).

I guess that I might be facing a very difficult dilema in a few months... a 11*14 Tachihara view camera, or a 5D with the 24-105 IS...  This of course unless the D200 puts up an impressive enough high iso performance when it is released.

Bernard, thanks for the link to DPReview - I looked at those images, and quite frankly I can't conclude anything about dynamic range because we don't know what kind of post-capture processing they did, and whether the contrast was kept deliberately a bit low to fully demonstrate the quality of that lens/sensor combination for capturing fine detail - which is astounding - even viewed on a web page. But their shots from the D2x, the 1Ds, and the 1DsII are also great, so atg this level of quality, what can one conclude of a comparative nature looking at different shots from different cameras over a web space?

ditto.........but I must say my 28-135 macro IS USM also has tremendous resolution (but some easily fixable CA for some kinds of shots), so the personal conundrum one always faces in such circumstances is whether the additional quality and features are worth the additional cost. The World isn't only fascinating and expensive, but replete with temptation!
