Lighthouse and Sun Pillar

Just for fun, I thought I'd post this.  I've been laid up for two weeks with a ski injury and this was the first time I got out in weeks.  This is the third sun pillar in the last three months that I've shot over the Grand Marias, MN lighthous.

Hi Bryan,

Great sun pillar!  Here in southern AZ, I've rarely seen sun pillars.  I saw one last week, but was stuck in traffic (I know--I should have the camera in the car!).

I love photographing weather phenomena (especially ice crystal phenomena of which this is one type), and it's amazing just how often something interesting is in the sky--one need only look up and keep a careful eye.

Thank macgyver.  Steve, I checked out your website.  I love the Brocken, I've only seen it when out flying and haven't ever gotten a good picture of it, and the fog bow with the snow!  Wow.  I saw my first fog bow this summer in WI.  You have some great pictures at your website.  It's really amazing what you can see if you look up.

Hi Bryan,

Thanks for looking at the pics.  I was recently back in WI, and I saw a display of ice pillars coming from oncoming cars that was truly spectacular.  It only lasted for about 1/4-mi and I was on an interstate with heavy traffic and no way to stop and photograph it.  I still regret not risking my life to get that pic.  I had my KM A2 with me too!!!

nicely done exposure of the various layers.  Am interested to know if you used the histogram to protect the highlights and metering method used

Thanks.  Yes, I used the histogram to protect the highlights as much as I could.  But, I also accepted the fact that there would be some blow-out around the sky and throughout the yellow in the sky.  I used blinkie highlights to see what I was going to have to put up with. I was going to copy all the data for you, but Capture doesn't let you select it.  I use Matrix metering and then Comped it +2.0.  I used Matrix, because it was just what I happened to have the camera in at the time.  Any metering, after looking at the blinkies and histogram would have worked fine.  I've found that Matrix work pretty well for the vast majority of situations what I need a quick shot so my camera stays in that mode most often.

Howdy,

Tim is one of the truly great people on this earth!  Yes, I have spent many-a-night on the mountaintop with Tim. Alas, I no longer work with him as I have moved projects.  I still see him from time to time though
