I often make composite photographic plates for various publications, and sometimes need good-looking jpgs from these Illustrator (.ai) files. What is the best way to make a .jpg from an .ai file? I can't seem to be able to make one that looks even halfway decent. Any advice?

Thanks,
Kevin

Open the .ai file in PS.

Thanks. So, then if I open it in Photoshop, and then save as a .jpg in Photoshop, it will look better?

Yes, it will look better. At least from CS2.

The same approach works to rasterize .pdf as well.
