Hi all,

A friend is experimenting strange banding in some images in his Canon 1Ds MKIII. The phenomena does not appear in all images, and when it appears apparently it is not in any particular situation (both with the camera fresh or hot at the end of the same); it seems common to have it in complete series of pictures taken over the same subject. The shots were taken at ISO100.

I have analysed it and the banding appears in all the un-demosaiced RAW channels, so it seems originated in the camera hardware, perhaps the sensor readout:




The questions are:

1. What could that be and where does it come from?
2. It's a hardware problem of this particular unit and the camera can be taken to the technnical assistance? (it's still in guarantee and has the Canon Professional Services facilites)

the sensor appears to be kaput; however, as it does not occur in all shots, perhaps the contacts to the board cause the problem.

Look at the masked pixels at the left side of the image (I rotated it, so that more of it is visible in the capture). This area is supposed to be very uniform grey, but see the part in the red rectangle.

I had that exact problem on an old Canon A95. Had to throw out the camera as the sensor was cooked. Of course there's a big difference between an A95 and a 1DS, but it's probably the sensor that needs replacing.

Thanks for your help, I will give the owner of the camera these observations when taking it to the assistance.

It seems incredible that a camera in that price range can produce so many problems; this man was also getting non-blowable spots in his sensor probably due to oil from the shutter mechanism. Now the sensor is working wrongly...

My one is on it's 3rd visit to Canon in just over a year, this time the shutter is needing attention. I was getting a white line on the edge at high shutter speeds. It can deliver outstanding results.....when it all works.

I have about similar issue maybe worse, a white banding on the top upper frame of the shutter occurring clearly when i shoot at higher shutter speed , it happened about 2 months ago and i sent it to Canon service about 3 weeks ago and they fixed it as they called me last week but still i didn't go to collect it.

That must have been a shutter error ("jamming" shutter), not electronics related.

That is why many people told me it is a shutter failure or issue, in all cases whether it is shutter or electronics i have to send it to service which i did, i will go soon to pick it up back.
