At least under the beta (I think I can say this), CS4 ran fine.

Users of the late, great Canvas X for Mac (last updated in 2005) are waiting for the inevitable day when hardware and OS's pass them by...

(If Andrew would like to test this we can talk.)

But I would think any currently active developer is going to have their imaging apps ready to go.

There is a rather bland statement on the Epson US support site:

'Epson is proud to support the Mac OS X Snow Leopard (v10.6) operating system from Apple. Please check this site periodically for updates regarding availability of Snow Leopard drivers, software updates, and user instructions.'

If I remember correctly Andrew has a 3800? Perhaps he some experience to draw on.

In any case I suspect my wife's iMac might be 'lucky' enough to get the first upgrade!

Beside Photoshop i also checked for updated drivers for hardware I use:

Epson V700 scanner: 28 july a version 3.280 was released on the dutch epson site with a comment: added support for snow leopard
Nikon D300 slr: no software update yet on Nikon Transfer (only thing I use) or notice that current software works
Canon iPF5100 printer: no updates yet or notice that current drivers/software works
Spyder3: no updates yet or notice that current drivers/software works

although snow leopard is ordered I hold off installing it untill Nikon and Canon confirm compatibility and maybe wait a bit longer until the .1 or .2 updates arrive ;-)

From my reading computability issues will be rare - the nature of this upgrade is different from past efforts.

I will clone, then upgrade and check things out. If all is not OK I will simply revert to the clone until they are.

Hmm... CS4 is fine, but it better be - CS4 only started shipping a year or so ago. I did not see any message from Adobe on Lightroom. And boy, the CS3 folk will be pissed if there would be an issue with SL. Myself included...

A developer I know well has been using each build of SL as it has come along. There have been no CS4 issues so far. What he has noticed is a more 'snappy' OS (and Leopard was already much snappier than Tiger), lots of small tweaks and of course a saving of nearly 6GB in HD space.

Ditto re CS3, but I'm expecting it will run OK.

Epson 3800: the Epson website here, under the "Detailed Specs" tab, "Operating Systems Supported" section, lists Snow Leopard as a supported OS. Nothing more specific than that.

Epson V750 Pro scanner: Support page lists TWAIN Driver and Epson Scan software version 3.25A (12552) as OS X 10.6.x "compatible".

Nikon Scan software: nothing on Nikon's site I could find. I have heretofore used Nikon Scan to drive my Nikon 9000 because its interface is simple and clean; but given Nikon's past stated intention not to continue updating Nikon Scan, it looks like I may be shelling out some $$ to switch to SilverFast, unless NS just happens to work. I've never liked VueScan's hideous user interface, but I may have to swallow that cup of bile instead, given its much more attractive price.

Pelao mentioned working from a clone of your system and that's a great idea. Use an external drive or a partition on your internal one, clone your current setup and upgrade the clone to Snow Leopard. No hard done, regardless of what happens.

And VueScan isn't so bad, considering you can use it with most any scanner, whereas Silverfast is proprietary, no? NikonScan is so old and flakey, though easier on the eye, I agree.

Any word on real-world performance jumps, when running PS or ACR with Snow Leopard?

I managed to get a brief look at it when it was still alive, and it will be a great resource in the next little while when they finally get the servers stabilized. It was quite comprehensive.

I have a new MacPro arriving on 8th Sept and I presume it will come loaded with SL. If not, I will put SL on it and then install all my normal programs and see what happens. I'll take great care to keep the Macbook Pro AS IS just in case... But I imagine any problems, or many of them, will have surfaced by then as SL is released tomorrow.

On the PC some operations are a lot faster, others not very different and I've heard it averages about a 10% bump across the board average boost for CS4 moving from 32bit to 64bit -- and that is with CS code written for the 64bit OS. Since CS4/Mac is still a 32bit program, I would not expect much if any improvement until they release a 64bit version compatible with SL.

Sounds like some good news for me.

I'm looking forward to the wonderful day when ....


...there'll be a 50MPX full frame DSLR and a 100MPX MFDB (after which we'll be in Canon G11 land where nobody cares about pixel counts), there'll be a Mac Pro that can handle those file sizes comfortably (probably already is!), the Epson 3800 replacement will have arrived, CSx will have all the stacking goodies from the current extended edition, we'll have gone through Blu-ray and be settled in a flash card based world, there'll be an Eizo monitor with a Pro Photo RGB gamut, etc etc...

...and we can all stop spending time and money on upgrades and spend it instead on the taking and making of photographs!

That will never happen when you consider that two of the primaries of this space fall outside the CIE chromaticity diagram (they are theoretical "colors").

iPF wiki reports that compatible software for Canon iPF series printers will be early October - that means I'm holding off my main machine until then (although I'll probably experiment with SL on my laptop). Anyone know about Capture One?

DXO does not work yet - below the official reply from DXO support:

"While Snow Leopard is not officially supported, the test team confirms that they have tested DxO Optics Pro v5.x under Snow Leopard RC.

They have noted that DxO Optics Pro v5.x is not fully functional on this platform. Users may experience unexpected behaviors under the "Select" tab.

If you have determined that you must use Snow Leopard with v5.x, we recommend that you not use the "Select" tab functions, but rather browse to find the images you wish to process and with your mouse click/drag them from the folders in which they reside into the filmstrip.


Further investigation will be performed as soon as we receive the final release of Snow Leopard to test with."

I have done an install of Snow Leopard on a clone of my boot drive, and on a preliminary test of the Nikon 9000, Nikon Scan opened and recognized the scanner. I had no film handy to actually scan, but it went through all the motions of moving the film holder to produce thumbnails. That's as far as I got. It's encouraging that the scanner drivers at least seem to work.

Of note is that Flexcolor 4.8.8 for the Hasselblad 646 scanner also seemed to fire up properly and recognize the scanner.

I'll do more testing and repost when I get a chance. Just in case there is anyone else out there still scanning film!

I got Snow Leopard to work with the Z3200 just fine. You need to throw away the old HP Printer Utility, the new one comes with the 1st Software Update you do after the Snow Leopard installation, do one right away.

The printer's panel is how you access the new HP Utility. The utility will calibrate the screen with the built in Apple screen calibration stuff, or if you have APS instralled it will take you to APS. So APS isn't free, I didn't understand that it would choose between the two.

However, I can't get APS running, it crashes, and X-Rite doesn't have a fix yet.

My Epson 3800 is working fine. You need to have rosetta running and reload the driver, as well as delete your old printer and reload it new. All my previous paper presets reloaded fine.

It is working, but seems a little slow. I think it's running through Rosetta, so that may be the reason for the slowness.

if you open the activity monitor, you should be able to see if program X is running under Rosetta or not (ala the Kind column) and yes,
Printer Watcher is a PowerPC binary.

Also, regarding this week's hysteria on SL & Flash, you have to understand that in a huge OS complete release, Apple has to freeze their components ahead of time in order to permit full end-to-end testing. The last thing they are going to do is shove a new version of the always buggy, always insecure Flash into the release at the last minute. Like they say, you go w/ what you have sometimes.

Anyone who has to get actual work done won't load a new OS in the first few weeks of availability unless they can be either sure there are no problems or that they can easily 'go back' to what was working for them.

Capture One is working fine as long as you've purchased it already. The problem seems to be Capture One in Trial mode is buggy.
I've been told much software with activations codes are being broken by Snow Leopard. This happened to me with Bokeh, contacted Alien Skin, they fixed the problem.

Capture One 4.8.2 is working fine, including tethering with 1DsIII.

I've found the appearance of my Eizo SX2761W monitor has changed. Dock icons are far less vibrant than they were, Astia-like palette rather than the previous Velvia. It used to look quite different from my Macbook Pro monitor; now v similar. Tried recalibrating it several times. Also on reboot, get error message saying that it profile is out of date, even though I'd just calibrated it....

Capture NX2 (V2.2.2) seems to open files which were previously in the library, but not new additions.

Then there is the business with Epson printers, only upgraded after Epson tech guy assured me that they had fully successfully tested the 7800 driver with SL.

Quite frustrating.

I noticed this too on the NEC but I suspect this is correct behavior with the new TRC gamma of this OS and that previously, those icon's were not correctly previewing. Images in color managed applications are fine which is what really counts here.

Imacon/Hasselblad 646 running via Flexcolor 4.8.8 works flawlessly, despite the email I received from Hasselblad warning of "incompatibilities".

I have enough confidence that I'm going to go ahead and do a full upgrade on my main hard drive. I've been testing on a clone of my boot drive until now.

Assuming I'm not the only denizen of LL still scanning film....



**UPDATE** After having posted that Nikon Scan 4.03 worked, I have to retract that (post deleted). It *did* work on a clone of my startup disk, upgraded to Snow Leopard. I proceeded with an upgrade of the original startup disk, and it worked fine until a restart. It now crashes on launch.

Deleting everything, emptying Trash Can, and restarting and reinstalling has not fixed it. Same problem.

Guess I'll finally have to climb the learning Everest that is VueScan's clunky interface (since it works fine) or shell out $500 for the beehive interface that is SilverFast. Alas Nikon Scan; you were simple and straightforward.

Spyder 3 Elite Works flawless on my computer, had to calibrate both my screens with the update

Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop CS4 Photomerge called from Lightroom doesnt work. Also sometimes "Edit in Photoshop CS4" doesnt load the image in CS4.
Nik photoshop plugins I use them all, havnt bumped into any issues.

Workaround. I just drag the images to photoshop icon the dock. Thou I have to save metadata to my images otherwise camera raw doesnt remmember all my edits. My own fault I have set Lightroom to not update the metadata to the files automatically to save performance.

I regret to jumped on the upgrade a bit quick. Many small issues thou they can be solved by workarounds. But I kind use Photoshop CS4 with Lightroom daily so I starting get used to do things that doesnt screw up Adobe application

Some incompatibilities between Sinar CaptureShop™ 5.6.3, Sinar eXposure™ 6.2 and Mac OS 10.6 has
been detected so for the time being it is recommend NOT to use these programs with Snow Leopard.
Until the problems will be solved the recommended OS is the current Mac OS 10.5.x.

However if you have programs that work with DNG format the esprit 65 cameraback can always be used

I asked about LightZone in the "Other RAW Converters" forum, since it wasn´t mentioned at all here. Since then, I´ve made a test install of SL, including Rosetta, and tried a few of my image handling sw. Since it might be of some interest in this thread as well, here´s a copy:

Lightroom 2.5 runs perfectly, accessing my present library on its own drive.

Photoshop CS2 runs fine, and cooperates with Lightroom without a hitch.

Light Zone (latest version) runs fine, too.

Capture One (again, latest version) seems to run OK as well, but haven´t had time to test it much.

My Epson 3800 needed a driver download directly from Epson (wasn´t in Apple´s library), but seems to work OK."
