— A Muskoka Sunset Portfolio —

I have made a summer project of shooting sunsets from my cottage deck. This page is devoted to some of these shots. They're done simply for the pleasure of it, but I believe some people might find them of interest as well.

Muskoka Moonset #1 Ñ Ontario, 2000 (D)

One of the pleasures of my summer place on Lake Muskoka is that it faces west, and so almost every evening presents a sunset photography opportunity from my deck. Because of our high latitude, in early June sunsets are late and long. Here though there were only a few minutes to capture through a long lens this crescent moon setting behind a distant island.

Muskoka Sunset Panorama #1, 2000

I've always been frustrated by being limited in my ability to capture the span of this vista. Even a camera like the XPan doesn't give the right combination of reach and breadth. A wide angle lens alone would simply make the subject smaller.

This photograph was created from 4 separate images using a software package called PowerStitch.

Red Cloud Sunset Ñ Muskoka, Ontario, 2000

I ran indoors for my camera when we saw this remarkable red cloud. It was illuminated from beneath and made so striking by being silhouetted against the dark clouds behind it. Just a couple of frames and it was gone.

Muskoka Sunset #3 Ñ Muskoka, Ontario, 2000

I saw this one coming. July of 2000 was a very rainy month in Muskoka, as it was elsewhere in the Northeast. Interestingly, we seemed to get a bit of clearing most evenings and sometimes these wonderful sunsets would jump out at us, while sometimes they developed slowly.

Photographing these sunsets from my cottage deck has become a bit of a hobby this summer. Looks like I'm on my way to a collection.

Muskoka Sunset #4 Ñ Muskoka, Ontario, 2000

Whenever my wife and I see a view like this from our deck we say, "Just another pretty sunset." Of course we are being facetious. Seeing a couple of such sunsets a summer is a joy. Two a week is amazing.
