Rural Ontario & Elsewhere Nearby

Though I do most of my more serious landscape work on trips to the Southwestern U.S., Ontario, Canada is my home and I enjoy traveling around it and doing landscape photography as the opportunities arise. This page as well as ones listed at the bottom of the page contain photographs produced in my own "back-yard", over several years, and includes other locales in northeastern North America.

Forest at Dawn Forest at Dawn — Ontario 1996

Sometimes a simple drive in the local countryside early on a Sunday morning has produced strong images for me.  This time I happened on a woodlot shortly after dawn and saw this multi-layered image.

Taken on Provia 100 with a Mamiya 645 and 55mm lens.

Holy Cow Holy Cow — Ontario 1997

Things are not always what they seem. Though it looks like a digitally manipulated image this photograph is a straight print from the original transparency.   What initially caught my eye for this sunrise shot was the delicate colour in the clouds.  By the time I pulled the car over, the trees on an intervening hill added a striking silhouette.  It was only when I had the camera set up on the tripod that I noticed the cow. Serendipity.

Taken on Provia 100 with a Contax RTSIII and 135mm f/2.8 lens.

Cow at Sunrise Cow at Sunrise — Ontario 1997

Maybe I should start a cow page!  But, when you're photographing in farm country you take what you can get.  These are my two cow pictures (no, this isn't a trend) curiously, taken just a couple of weeks apart.  None before, and none since.

Taken with a Contax RTSIII and 135mm f/2.8 lens on Provia 100 .

Road Into The Mist Road Into the Mist, Ontario, 1996

I frequently rise well before dawn and drive into the countryside an hour or more north of the city.  I have no destination in mind — simply the joy of discovery.   Occasionally I am rewarded with an image such as this.

Photograph taken with a Contax RTSIII and Zeiss 180mm f/2.8 Sonnar lens.

Vermont Lake Reflection- thumb.JPG (23856 bytes) Early Morning Reflection, Vermont — 1996

This photograph is strange because it's deliberately upside down.

I don't know why, but when I saw this reflection on a still lake as I drove through the mountains of Vermont one spring morning I actually "saw" it this way.   Strange.  I think it "works". What do you think?

Taken with a Leica M6 and 50mm f/2.0 Summicron on Provia 100.

Quebec Winter Sunset ‹ 1998

On a ski trip in Northern Quebec I spent a couple of late afternoons off the slopes exploring the countryside of the Laurentian Mountains. These lenticular clouds were a surprise, since I've only otherwise seen them in the mountains of the American southwest. This photograph is exactly what was recorded on film, with no digital manipulation.

Photographed with a Canon EOS 3 and Canon 100~400mm IS L zoom on Provia 100.
