An Antarctic Photographic Expedition
With Michael Reichmann
December — 2005
In early December, 2005, I will be leading a photographic expedition to Antarctica. This trip will last for 12 days, departing from Ushuaia, Argentina at the tip of South America bound for the South Shetland Islands and the Antarctic Peninsula.
We will cross the turbulent Drake Passage and then spend a week in the calm waters of an Antarctic spring, going ashore in Zodiacs two to three times each day to photograph the unique landscape and wildlife found at the bottom of the world. Our voyage is operated by Quark Expeditions, one of the most experienced operators of adventure tours in the Antarctic. Our ship will be a converted Russian research vessel designed for Antarctic conditions and specially fitted-out for this type of expedition. This ship is completely ours for this trip, and all 50 passengers will be members of our photographic expedition. We will be in complete control of our itinerary and thus will be able to maximize photographic opportunities.
In addition to the adventure of this trip and the opportunity to do photography in a very special environment, this trip will offer a unique learning experience. In addition to internationally renowned photographer, educator and author Michael Reichmann, three other world-class photographers and digital imaging experts will be onboard to act as your guides, consultants and teachers.
The four of us will be providing Photoshop, ink-jet printing and digital imaging seminars on a regular basis throughout the trip. We will also be shooting alongside workshop members every day as well as being available for one-on-one instructional sessions throughout the trip.
The photographic as well as educational opportunities on this trip are unlike anything ever offered before.
Who is it For?
This trip is for photographers of all capabilities. Professionals seeking to work alongside like-minded colleagues as well as photographers with more limited experience are all welcome. The only requirement will be a passion for photography and adventure.
Spouses as well as non-photographers are also welcome because the ship's expedition leader and staff are experts on the Antarctic, and extensive seminars and non-photographic learning opportunities will be available.
The Cost and The Timing
The departure date will be in early December of 2005, approximately 15 months from now. The trip itself will last for 12 days and at least 2-4 travel days will need to be added for going and returning from Argentina. This means being away from home for approximately two weeks. It is our intention to schedule the trip so that members will be able to be home by at least one week prior to Christmas.
The cost has not been finalized, but depending on the type of cabin accommodation chosen it will be approximately U.S. $8,000. This is an all-inclusive price, covering everything except your airfare to Argentina. The typical cost of an economy seat from New York to Buenos Aries is approximately $1,200, so you can figure the total cost of the trip at about $10,000.
A formal announcement of this workshop expedition with firm dates, pricing and the names of the participating instructors will be ready within a couple of weeks. This announcement is intended to get you thinking about the possibility of joining us. If you would like to have your name added to a wait list for pre-annoucement priority booking drop me a line right away. There is no obligation, of course. Put the word Antarctic in the title of your e-mail so I'm sure not to miss it.
If you register for the pre-announcement wait list and then do join the expedition you will receive a free Lowepro Dryzone Waterproof Photo Backpack worth $300. This offer ends as soon as the formal workshop announcement is made.
What are you waiting for? Send me a note saying that you're interested in this trip, and as soon as we're ready to accept bookings you'll be the first to know. There are only 44 places available on this expedition and it's bound to sell out quickly. So, if you have the time and the money, now's the time to act.

Update: August 21, 2004
The final details for this workshop are still being worked out, but I am now pleased to announce the roster of instructors for the trip. In alphabetical order the expedition's photographic teachers and guides will be...
John Paul Caponigro, Steve Johnson, Michael Reichmann, Seth Resnick, and Jeff Schewe
This is possibly the finest group of photographic and digital imaging instructors ever to work together on a single workshop. Chris Sanderson, the award-winning director / cameraman for the Video Journal will also be available to work with anyone who will be shooting video during the expedition. In addition to scheduled seminars throughout the 12 day trip all six instructors will be available for one-on-one instruction and print evaluations. Each of us will also be living and shooting alongside workshop members every day.
If you would like to add your name to the waitlist for this workshop expedition, now is the time to do so. It will almost certainly be sold out by the time it is formally announced next month, and people on the waitlist will be given priority in reserving their places.
