Whatever It Takes To Get The Shot
The Palouse is located in the southeastern corner of Washington State. It’s not a National or State Park and it has no real borders. It’s a region of rolling hills, big open skies and fields of wheat and other crops that stretch past the horizon. It’s a place that once you visit it you’ll want to visit again at different seasons. It’s full of surprises and you’ll stumble upon, beautiful farms, abandoned building and vehicles, quaint towns and big sky landscapes. We will be visiting the Palouse at harvest time where golden fields of wheat will contrast beautifully with big open skies and puffy clouds. The harvest taking place will provide us wonderfully unique patterns of fields being harvested and a contrast of colors that the IQ2x0 back will capture in unbelievable detail.
There are no set places (except a few) for shooting in this region. This is about exploration and opportunity, as a field on one day will be looking totally different the next day. We will set out and explore this region for sunrise everyday and during the day explore further. We will be traveling in two vans and we will split up and meet occasionally during the day. There will be classroom time where Kevin and Jeff will share their imagery as well as their adventures around the world and their approach to seeing and capturing the images they are both famous for. Both will share their processing and post-processing techniques.
We will begin our adventure together on the 18th of August. You’ll arrive at the Spokane airport and be transported to our base hotel in Pullman. You will check in and around 3:30 we will kick off the event with introductions and an overview of our trip and our goals and what to expect. You’ll receive the Phase One camera system and be given an overview of how to use it. The beauty of the Phase One system is it is so easy to use. The IQ back is so intuitive it doesn’t need much to be up and shooting. And, shooting is what we hope to do. Our goal is to shoot the sunset this evening and have you become familiar with the camera. Phase One will have a team there to help and support you during the whole workshop. After dinner we will show you how to import your images into Capture One. You’ll be surprised at how easy all of this is and you will soon see what you have been missing in your images. If you are a Lightroom user then that’s OK too as Phase One files will work great with Lightroom.
In addition to the camera system Phase One will provide a set of lenses for each van so that you can try out numerous different lens combinations during the workshop. Lens ranges from 28mm through 240mm will be available. In addition we will also have an ALPA technical camera with us with a bank of lenses. We’ll help you understand how the ALPA technical cameras function as well as why and where you would want to use one.
Beginning the next morning and for the duration of the workshop we will be up before dawn and on our way to locations to catch the hills and fields during sunrise. We will return for breakfast and much needed coffee. Based on weather forecast and such we will then mix the daytime hours with either exploration into the field and classroom time covering Capture One and lectures by the instructors. A uniqueness of LuLa - PODAS workshops is we stay together the whole time. We eat, shoot, and socialize together. Discussions on photography and technique will extend beyond the classroom. You’ll be amazed how much you will learn from the instructors, the Phase One team but also from your fellow attendees. Travel time to locations are like mini-seminars in the vans. Prior to the workshop we will do our best to nail down times for everything but weather and light will be our guide in how we arrange the workshop.
We will also have an optional photograph the Palouse from the air option for those that are interested. This is a great way to really capture the textures and dynamic patterns of the region. Information on this option will be presented after you register. We normally will use 2-3 planes taking those that are interested for early morning or late day flights. Seeing the Palouse from the air is quite amazing.
As we near the end of our workshop we will do image critiques as well as be available for one on one help with editing and image selection. You will be responsible for providing 6 images that you have shot during the workshop. On closing night we show a multi-media show of everyone's images as well as fun candid shots of our time together. You’ll receive a certificate for attending. The only things you need to bring to this workshop is a sturdy tripod, CF cards and your computer. Everything else we take care of.
We have visited the Palouse numerous times and each time is another adventure as we explore paved and unpaved roads and discover more treasures of this remarkable area. The combined experience of the team and instructors will mean you get the shot and come home with some new portfolio prints. This will be a fun and educational trip not to mention one full of great photography. Kevin and Jeff are looking forward this workshop as much as you are and we all hope you can make a point to join this adventure.
Spaces for this workshop will go quickly. Class size is limited to 15 attendees so register today. We will stay in touch with you after you register and provide help in preparing for this workshop.
